TURN - 2006 - Competition for the refurbishment of Turnhout's marketplace
Public spaces should be highly flexible and uniform. Homogeneity and lack of superfluous installations should be their main property. But in Turhout, the case is somewhat complicated : an important church and its garden have a central position on the marketplace. How can we charge the remaining space with signification and transform the space consuming garden into new potential for Turnhout ? The garden is hypertrophied to a big rectangle, thus becoming a kind of intimate "roof" that can shelter various activities. The status of the church and its garden gets reinforced and delimit clearly defined open spaces. The main traffic flows receive a clear, almost cliché expression, ensuring legibility and security. All bus stops are condensed in one new infrastructure, which also proposes new potentialities by forming a public tribune on the main space. |
